Northern zone of Java Island in which Central Java Province is located was the study area of this research for the first year. This research aimed 1) to identify the type of hazards and assess the multi-risks, 2) to dig the local knowledge for mitigation and adaptation strategy development, and 3) to build the community awareness and preparedness of disaster.
This research was conducted in Desa Setrokalongan, Kecamatan Kaliwungu, Kabupaten Kudus through field survey and followed by focused group discussion to deepen the survey. Sampling method applied in this research was purposive sampling by considering the frequently flooded area. The field data was then analyzed using descriptive qualitative technique.
The study area has experienced many disasters such as flood, tidal flood, high tide, windstorm, drought, and landslide. The earthquake is not considered as a serious hazard. To build the mitigation and adaptation strategy, local knowledge was identified and applied. One of the local knowledge was “dina rèntèng” which was used to indicate the flood to occur during the rainy season. “Dina renteng” mean that there is a prolonged rainfall for a couple days. The community prepare themselves by building the house with high foundation (house on stilts like) or story house. They equip themselves with stereo foam which is used as water transportation (stereo foam boat). In order to build the community preparedness, a disaster resilient community has been initiated in Desa Setrokalangan.
