Ritsumeikan University and Gadjah Mada University, one of the most renowned universities in Indonesia, are delighted to present the international symposium on Disaster Mitigation. Since the conclusion of MOU between the two universities in 1996, we have been conducting active research and students collaborations, especially in the field of Disaster Mitigation Research.
Last year, the Japanese government launched “The Top Global University Project” that encourages Japanese universities to carry out more collaborations with top universities from all over the world to make Japanese higher education truly internationalized in order to enhance their global competitiveness, and Ritsumeikan has been selected as one of the global hub universities to receive a large amount of fund from the government. We are coming into “the era of Asia”. This rapidly growing area attracts more business and people, but at the same time, there are many problems and issues that need to be solved.
We believe it is important to develop human resources who are able to build trust and friendship to tackle these problems with other members of Asia, and consider Indonesia as our important partner for its immeasurable potential and possibilities in the future. In this symposium, we expect to see active discussion between researchers as well as between undergraduate students who have carried out community service activities in disaster areas. They will share their experiences and lessons learned from their activities to discuss their mission for the future of Asia. We hope to contribute to the development of human resources for more sustainable future of Asian region through this symposium. This event is open to the public and we look forward to seeing many students and faculty members from both UGM and Ritsumeikan as well as our alumni.
